Our little Chadu is laying eggs. It's hard to believe that these little creatures can produce size eggs from which one thinks,IMPOSSIBLE!

Some advice when selecting birds!:

-UPRIGHT (vertical position)
-LONG THIGHS and SHANKS (legs: upper and under)
-NATURAL HEAD PULL (SELAM)
-GOOD WINGDROP (straight down and more forward)
-TAIL at 2 a clock!
- Average back lenght will do fine when birds having the above features.

No use to breed for short backs only as that feature is not enough to make it a serama. It's more important to select birds who have long legs , head pull and who keep their bodies upright. In fact they have kinda simular features which can be compared to the Ko Shamo.
The natural performance in Serama breed is a must! Serama like to show off! They walk on their tippy toes and oft march like a soldier. Because of their head pull they create a nice S-shaped silhouet. The bird seems like courting and pushes the head back into their saddle. This is what they our Malaysian friends call "SELAM"! See picture below which was taken while doing research for the Serama althrough Malaysia on one of my journeys in 2012. Where i visited the finest breeders.

A bird with head pull or SELAM has the tip of the beak pointed down. When you see a bird with it's beak pointing steep up, the bird has been trained by the owner hand not only to stay at place but also forced the bird into a unnatural head pull which is not the shape of it's own. It's only a fake S-shape! Pushing a bird into some sort of position does not make it a serama!

Asian birds are trained in a different way. Birds get place on the table within a fenced circle. Judges never touch the birds at competitions. For that reason Serama require training to stay on the talble!

The judge assistant places the bird on the table an then it has to perform by itself. No modeling or sculpting by someone hand is taking place during the time of judging! Look for previous posts on my blog to see pictures, CLICK HERE.

Photoshoot of JTR kid and niece

This boy has still kapan features but improved already a lot towards serama. He inherited the malay serama attitude. He has a strong headpull what our malay friends call, SELAM!

Another true serama feature is the trembling neck movements. Also the long legs are an improvement!
The bird is not trained in any way...this bird performing is completely natural, no modeling or fussing! For that reason i took a picture in his pen surrounded with his girls.

Also this girl who is related to the above boy. They have the same father and their mothers are from the same family tree.

Both birds are a result of the halfbloodproject 2012. Hope you like them?

Ugly parents vs beautiful kids

It's so funny thinking about a theory when ugly parents have beautiful children and would the theory work visa versa too? It sure does in the chicken would. This theory really counts for the halfblood project. In fact it is proven that outcrossing the "so called european serama" with Malay Serama a huge improvement occurs.
For example:
It's incredible how the little horrible looking mother (named Kelly) left in the picture below produces such nice offspring. The reason why i used Kelly to breed with was because she is very upright when natural behaving. Another feature why i like her is for her long neck. Also nice yellow colored shanks. She is short feathered and is and may be concidered as a slim type. Even for her very small size she is laying rather big eggs. It's hard to believe that such a small bird can produce such huge eggs. More...she is split for silkied. All in all, i just had to use her.
Father is a short feathered Malay roo. Which i call Durando.

Next picture is their daughter which is so upright that she looks like a Ko Shamo.

And what happens when mating Kelly to another malay roo?

Halfbloods versus American serama

From the halfbloodproject 2012 and Cuckoo americans.......
Two month old chicks All born on September 7th 2012
This is an nice example from my serama project 2012 to show you. The three dark ones are ordinary American serama. The lighter ones are the improved birds called halfbloods. American (EU) serama x Malay serama. All these chicks are only two months old.
You can see that the halfbloods are smaller in size. They have a better attitude and have inherited a natural S shape from the Malay parent. No encouragement is needed here to make them look nice!
The S shape is totally absent for the american ones. The only way to make those Kapan-serama look nice is to push, squeeze and modeling the bird untill the bird has made it for the right pose which it will hold for a couple of seconds only....and when trained enough! Different from the true serama which will walk with grace. Keep it's breast up sometimes so high you might think the bird will tip over. A serama must have an upright body. The birds has long thights and legs. Tail must be at two a clock. A natural S-shape. Most people think they have to breed for short backs which is partly true. Most important is the natural S-shape. A good bird with S-shape will need that place in her/his back to roll over it's neck and head there.

Breeding the Malay serama are giving so much satisfaction and almost instant result in most cases! It's such a joy working with these birds. Ofcourse there are breeders who prefer the American serama which is almost a breed on it's own. Only some good breeders know the art of breeding them. Unfortunately there are too many breeders who breed them for pet-birds only and not care what those birds looks are. A fine birds has the looks + great character.

There is a saying: world smallest chicken? Is it? The vid below wil show you different. The smallest chicken is the serama, the real ones only. You will notice that the halfblood chicks are smaller sized then the dark ones. They are so much smaller because they inherited 50% genes of the true breed parent. See for yourself.
