The Serama is a Malay bantam. It is considered to have them imported in the U.S. somwhere in the year 2001. Later 2005 they appear to see in Europ. After a trip we made through Malaysia May-June 2011 something else at issue appeared.
Serama would derive from different chicken breeds such as the "ayam Kapan" and "ayam kate". Descendants of these animals have been imported but not the Serama as we know it in Malaysia, talking about "the pure breed"!
It is ofcourse a blow in the face when this information comes to ears, but it is sheer reality. This information was found in Malaysia during our trip and given by breeders who have been lived with serama breeding for decades. Some ignorant people call the Malaysian Serama to be of the extreme kind. What a misconception!
The so called US or EU serama aint no serama at all! For Serama = Serama and Malaysian only!
There is no American Serama just like there is no European Serama. Only a poor look alike breed. Malaysian breeders call them "old breed" or "before 2000 breed". This information was kinda upsetting to some US breeders. Some even felt theirself being under attack. Thinking different won't make it go away or turn our bantams into pure breed. Nothing of a kind will happen. Because the real serama is a different breed than the ones we know in the US and Europ. Unfortunately but that's the way it is, either we like or not! :(
Why are these Malaysian birds so much different then the birds we call Serama in our country. I remember myself how anxious i was to see these birds in person first time ever. What a thrill! Our first visit was at the LEASF. It was there where we saw birds perform like never before. It came very clear to us that these birds have a very upright body posture. The neck inplant is tilted. These birds have a natural head pull back. Precisely those characteristics are making the S-shape. By this oblique neck inplant the animal breast looks twice as big. The head is pulled back behind it's breast. Some birds can completely hide there head behind their breast when seen from a frontal angle. The animals are showing off by themselfs and have a vertical wingdrop. In many cases, the bird wings are that aimed in such a position that wings are carried in front of their legs. Good Serama carries it's tail slightly tilted backwards. So that the tail does not press against the head.
We were amazed by their smallness. The animals in Europe are mostly giants compared with the real breed! They are so tiny but then again how huge is their affectionate nature, which is so very attractive to humans. They have their own quirks, whims, stubborness and attitude. For those which has experienced serama....will be addicted forever.
We got adviced to import the pure blood ASAP and not to mix it with our poor birds. Birdflu made an end to import/export of birds. Hopefully there will be changes concerning legislation allowing for real Serama import to be possible. Especially now while danger of birdflu in no longer a threat. The current legislation is currently as inscrutable and complex that officials do not exactly know whether or not to import birds....typical Belgian!
